The former Manchester United forward joined Marseille last summer in a €31.6 million (£27m/$34m) deal after a loan spell in La Liga with Getafe. Greenwood has gone on to net 18 goals in 31 league games for Marseille and sits second in the goalscoring charts in France behind only Ousmane Dembele. He signed a five-year contract when joining Marseille but is now "yearning" for a return to the Premier League, according to .

Manchester United cashed in on Greenwood after it became clear he had no future at the club. The forward saw allegations of attempted rape, assault and coercive and controlling behaviour discontinued in February 2023, but did not play for United after January 2022. He has, however, gone on to thrive at Marseille where his goals have helped Roberto De Zerbi's side join the battle for a Champions League spot for next season. Yet it's not been all plain sailing as the Italian coach has criticised Greenwood during the campaign and even benched him due to reported concerns about his attitude.

A source told the tabloid: "When Mason first left United he loved Spain. He and Harriet moved to Madrid and rebuilt their lives. He loved the fact he could just play football and his life off the pitch was not the subject of such intense focus. He was really happy to sign for Marseille and loved living in France. But he’s been abroad for nearly two years and the novelty has worn off. Mason’s family visit but he is very introverted and misses his extended family and the friends he has from home. A move back to the North West could suit him as he feels the vitriol he previously faced has died down a bit and people may have moved on."

There has been speculation that clubs such as Barcelona and Atletico Madrid could move for Greenwood, although little talk of interest from Premier League sides. Indeed the former Manchester United forward has been warned he "doesn't exist" in England anymore despite his form at Marseille. Greenwood and Marseille will be back in action on Sunday when they face a crunch clash against Lille in Ligue 1.
